Content

From the Utah Curriculum for 3rd grade: Standard 1, Objective 2, parts a and b, and Standard 8, Objective 6, parts c and f. After this activity the student should know how to develop language through viewing media and presenting. They should also know how to produce informational text, and they should understand how to share writing with others using illustrations to add meaning.

This activity will cover all of these points because the students are going to have to communicate with each other to decide on what animal, object or thing they want to use to describe each letter. They will create visual drawings of whatever animal or object they decide on by actually drawing it on a piece of paper. Then they will be sharing their illustrations to people who will be watching their video and the illustrations will add meaning to the specific letter. The illustrations will help the person watching the video associate letters with words. The student will also learn the specific purpose in using certain media to view information. This pedagogy will be good to use in this situation because it covers all of the content in this lesson.

Technology

We will be using Photostory 3 which can be downloaded for free at:

This is a good tool to use in this activity because it allows the students to upload pictures of the drawings they made for the ABC book, as well as record sounds to be played to describe the object in their drawing. It can be a really engaging activity for the students because when they know that it will be their voice on the actual video they will be more motivated in participating in the activity. It can be a fun, exciting, and engaging activity to do because the kids will be wholly involved in each part of the activity, and it will give them a sense of achievement when it's finished.
