Literacy Technology

Content: Kindergarten Language Arts, Standard 4, Objective 1, part a: name all upper-and lower-case letters of the alphabet in random order.

Pedagogy: Teach students how to match lower case letters with the corresponding upper case letter. Practice with the students and see who is learning the concept and who is struggling to grasp the concept; work extra with the struggling students. Incorporate the concept of matching throughout the class period, not just during the activity, so that the students can learn to apply the concept to real life.

Technology: The following game called "Alphabet Match" is available online at: http://www.internet4classrooms.com/kplus_alpha.htm. Kids will see a baby animal at a virtual park and they have to match the baby with it's parent. The baby animal is labeled with a lower case letter and the kids will have to match the baby to their parent with the matching upper case letter. As seen below, the baby kangaroo has a lower case "a" and will have to be matched to the parent with the upper case "A".


Mathematics Technology:

Content: 2nd Grade Math, Standard 3, Objective 2, part a: Identify clocks as tools that measure time.

Pedagogy: Teach students how to read time on analog clocks. This would be a whole class activity and would teach students how to tell time on a clock. You could incorporate the use of a real clock as well as the virtual clock on the computer to help the students bring the concept into real life situations.

Technology: The following online activity is simply called "Analog Clock" and is available online at: http://www.internet4classrooms.com/skills_1st_math.htm. It is a virtual clock that you can change by and hour at a time or 1, 5, or 15 minutes. If you used this as a whole class activity, you would connect your computer to a LCD projector so that the whole class could see the clock.



This virtual manipulative could be a great way with helping the students visualize the lesson. Once you teach the lesson to them on how to read clocks, they will be able to see it actually being done and this will help them grasp the concept better. It's also a fun way to interact with the students and have them interact with each other.
